My impression is most "protest voters" don't seriously want Johnson or Stein to become president and haven't thought thru what that means

It's non participation, in effect. No matter what happens we get an imperfect outcome and they avoid blame/responsibility.

this is the problem with the two party system pal. We have it in the UK. Two unlikeable parties/candidates w/ no other option

I've never "liked" a candidate who received my vote. When did that become a thing? You don't have to like a hiree.
