well we started with states that legitimately had a very long history as separate colonies before independence

Indeed! In the 20th century Venezuelan dictators developed an ideological excuse to dictatorship with that idea.

yeah my parents come from Taiwan, which the US backed as a "free" country but didn't have elections for 50 years
