And I think our cultural hysteria around them borders on the nasty.

When I was in high school I literally got slapped on the back of my head for accidentally spoiling something about Star Wars Episode II.

The worst part of that was that I was trying to show off my knowledge of rumours just so I could fit in.

A "spoiler" is almost always a specific plot point, a "twist" or "reveal." What's more interesting to me is how we *get* there in the story.

And that ineffable feeling, thankfully, cannot be inadvertently blurted out or tweeted by anyone.

When you attend an opera, they literally hand you a playbill that gives you a synopsis of the plot. Why? "Spoilers" aren't the point.

Knowing who dies doesn't ruin the opera for you. It allows you to focus on how the music and staging flow into and make up that moment.

I don't spoil things for people because I don't want to ruin *their* enjoyment of things, and posting spoilers to troll people is nasty.

On the same token, however, we may need to recognise that the deathly fear of spoilers is a particularly toxic aspect of our media culture.

And perhaps it's time to reassess it, and develop a healthier, more mature relationship to the media we consume.

can we at least agree that wherever on the importance spectrum spoiler warnings lie it's lower than trigger warnings

Spoiler warnings don't qualify as important but are a bit dickish not to give if something relies on surprises.

Trigger warnings are fundamentally important for the mental health and wellbeing of certain people.
