It's the exact opposite - it's a pattern established by *actually being attacked by angry dogs* often enough for you to become familiar with that fear

Actual exposure therapy relies on anticipation and control "Okay so here's the button, it plays audio of a barking dog when you push it, here's the slider to turn the volume up or down, whenever you're ready" It RELIES ON THE CONCEPT OF A TRIGGER WARNING

Giving you findings conscious awareness and control of your exposure to the trigger is how you gain resilience against it Doing the opposite - putting you in an environment where exposure is random, unpredictable and nonconsensual - *strengthens the trigger*

There is a problem when people are unwilling to start with even the level zero exposure. When you suspect that the level fear (it translates to other discomforts too by the way) they are willing to take on is zero fear. Basically they don't want to experience any discomfort now.

Honestly? That's fine There are plenty of phobias that are of things it is rational to be afraid of and avoid, for which there is no benefit If someone wants to stay afraid of sharks their whole life what are they missing out on

I think technically, in psychology, they don't diagnose it as a phobia no matter how strong the fear unless it's interfering with living their lives. So living in Ohio and not the Himalayas, my fear of falling off a cliff isn't a phobia.

Weird, are you sure? I would say it is still a phobia. But if a phobia is defined by having an impact on your life, then almost by definition a person who is avoiding any therapy has a psychological problem and it's not good for them. By definition damn it.

That's what I learned in like 2002 when there was an earlier edition of the DSM, and I have not studied psych since. Like if I was terrified of snakes but never ever saw or thought about one, that's not a phobia. If I had nightmares about snakes that kept me from sleeping...

...or such a terror of snakes that I couldn't stand the thought of walking in the grass near my house, or if spaghetti reminded me of snakes and gave me a panic attack, that's a phobia and needs to be addressed.

"and needs to be addressed." but here I am being roasted for saying that sometimes people avoiding discomfort are doing themselves a lot of harm. Obviously mostly by people who probably do just that and don't like being reminded about scary future that might involve snakes.

Avoiding discomfort is why we are what we are. It's basically the fundamental driving force of humanity if not all animals. "You just eat because you want to avoid discomfort and that's a problem."

Well, a small amount of discomfort for a bigger payoff can be good. Vaccines. Eating your vegetables. Getting your appendix out. But the proper treatment of a phobia should MINIMIZE any necessary discomfort in order to help the patient live a life without the worse suffering...

Instead of the whole notion of "You have to face your fears or they won't go away so I'm forcing my severely socially phobic child to be the star in the school play, I'm not telling her, rehearsals start tomorrow" or some nightmare like that.
