In the comics, John Walker was originally “Super Patriot,” an outspoken critic of Steve Rogers. It was essentially conservative Reagan-era Cap vs FDR Cap. The @falconandwinter avoided the direct conflict of MAGA Cap vs. POC Cap, which would be a big thing now.

In the comics, Walker is an overtly bad friend, though. I think the series treats the relationship much better.

For instance, they go undercover to investigate a white supremacist militia (the Watchdogs). Gruenwald makes a point of showing how much Walker agrees with their ideology. When in his home town (Custer’s Grove), the residents treat Lamar like crap, which Walker downplays.

Honestly, I don't think a true MAGA US Agent could be seen as an antihero. They'd pretty much just be villains.

What’s interesting is that Gruenwald made Walker more overtly MAGA in the comics 30 years ago.pic.twitter.com/Y2j9tMBzGp

Yeah, it appeared to me that MCU Sam represents America's ideals, while MCU Walker represents America as it is (entitled, a bit racist, authoritarian, but capable of doing both good and evil things).
-
Walker was never depicted as racist in the show. And the WOC wife and black BF are classic tropes/shorthand for a character not being racist.
