His "paycheck" comes from visiting various dead drops around his neighborhood to pick up sketchy envelopes filled with unmarked bills "Yeah, honey, my new government job is so classified they can't even let the IRS know about it"

Lol this screencap is just so funny to me His excited little-boy smile "I'm an antihero now, honey! I'm a gritty '90s antihero!"pic.twitter.com/97fQDFJbgd

"It's great! I didn't realize -- the stuff I got fired from being an inspirational superhero for, if you're an antihero they actually *pay you to do that* In this job it's not a 'red flag' it's a *positive*"

(This could apply equally well to washing out of the military and ending up an assassin for a supervillain crime syndicate *or* ending up a beat cop in an urban Black neighborhood)

Like seriously I'm pretty sure people have talked about washing out of the military for being unstable and violent and then getting a job as a cop immediately afterwards The dude who shot Tamir Rice had been fired from another police department for that reason

The performance of Val is so good. I mean I could envision Walker getting a mild pardon for his efforts in having saved members of the GRC, but they never out and say it one way or the other!

Didn't the original comics Walker end up a guy who generally meant well (and even would do well when the chips are down) but was super easily manipulated? I'm not familiar.

But yeah like... Walker is a surprising bright spot in F&TWS because this is a guy who COULD be, if never a Steve Rogers, a good, effective team player. They pointedly gave him a hero moment in the climax to show "No, he's not entirely beyond redemption." (cont)

If he was totally, purely irredeemable and unsympathetic he wouldn't WORK, narratively; as much as John Walker is a dick - he is such a dick - some part of you still wants to see him pull through, and that makes him being jerked around by Evil Elaine more poignant.

(Seriously, the Contessa is SO much just Evil Elaine, it's kind of amazing; at once incredibly, profoundly unlikable and this sort of flaky, smug charm. god, she's like a fem-Handsome Jack.)

She really is carefully designed to be like the exact opposite of MCU Nick Fury

Seems pretty clear the writers learned at least a few lessons from The Boys, which pulls off this stuff way more effortlessly, but it’s still heartening to see them make the attempt, and Russell and Louis-Dreyfus are really great casting.
