Hm... I think it's debatable, but from where I stand, "unsanctioned drone strikes are bad even if we have to endure attacks in their absence" seems like a bolder stance than "if xenophobic politicians just had the right black dude explain things to them calmly they'd listen".

Gotta say, he may not have superstrength, but for a guy that couldn't convince a small town bank to give him a mortgage Sam sure is good at reversing the flow of global geopolitics that mass violent protests couldn't budge.

If nothing else it would've made them feel way more awkward about denying his application

Honestly, that's one of the reasons why making the bank guy recognize him and deny the application anyway felt so weird in that episode. At my place we were all freaking out that Twitter took a day or two to go "what the hell" on that one.

Well that's pretty realistic. It's like the scene in One Night in Miami where he won't let Jim Brown into the house. As a POC you're welcomed into places, until you become inconvenient.

Yeah, but it goes to all the same plotting issues about when this thing decides to be a stark representation of harsh realities or a comic book world where superheroes give politicians public lessons in morality.

There were a million ways Sam could leverage his position in the bank scene. There is no way a major political decision would be reversed by the public stance of one guy on the back of a violent attack trying to prevent it.

Both scenes are playing on different levels of heightened reality and both fail to uphold suspension of disbelief for opposite reasons. It's just bad management of theme and tone, honestly.

I'm not really sure either are *that* heightened. We have no real evidence that the GRC listened to him. They postponed a vote many of them were already against in the face of awkward push back from a publicly popular figure. The bank thing is pretty much just real life.

I think people are leaning too hard on the idea that Sam's oratory changed their hearts and minds personally and not that he was giving this speech IN PUBLIC in front of a huge crowd filming him on their phones The practical purpose is to create a PR nightmare

I thought of that watching it, but I don't think they pulled it off as shot. They focus on the politicians listening and being shamed into silence, not on people at home changing their minds.

All the senator has to do in this version is say "we will not be swayed by violence" and call it a day. Probably another area that feels rushed there.

Yea, the show isn't really saying anything changed substantively overnight. I'm sure Sam's speech had the same effect it would've irl. It's a big prop the faction already shown to be anti-removal could wave.
