Would be right with you if his "reasonable flaws" didn't end up with him killing a guy who's begging for his life in front of a crowd. I mean, that's horrible timing for your "let's tackle racial issues with our superhero show" this month.

I agree with you that him choosing to save the politicians that wronged him is perfectly in character. But because it is and his character includes that trait it's a lot harder to buy that team Cap is mostly fine with him just for that.

There were ways to write that moment the would work, I think, but the hostages being the callous politicians being threatened by the one-world terrorists doesn't support it. It's another place where the ambiguous morality doesn't jive with the good-and-evil big climax brawl.

If Karli had bombed the politicians and was holding the government workers hostage now that would make more sense, actually. Ugh, I should stop. There are probably thinkpieces coming about the weird underlying centrism of this vs Winter Soldier, but I shouldn't tweet one here.

I mean it's not really that weird. It's the dominant political stance. If you're aiming for broad appeal utopian socialism isn't where you look.

Sure, but it was their choice to set up the Flag Smashers to be that. They didn't need to open that can of worms. And if they did, Winter Soldier showed they could have had the boldness to acknowledge the logical outcomes.

It's not bad because it's unusual, it's bad because the MCU has done more interesting things with equally challenging questions in this same franchise.

I'm not sure I really agree that Winter Soldier was more radical. F&WS, even if textually incoherent, ends up coming down on the side of the terrorists.

Hm... I think it's debatable, but from where I stand, "unsanctioned drone strikes are bad even if we have to endure attacks in their absence" seems like a bolder stance than "if xenophobic politicians just had the right black dude explain things to them calmly they'd listen".

Gotta say, he may not have superstrength, but for a guy that couldn't convince a small town bank to give him a mortgage Sam sure is good at reversing the flow of global geopolitics that mass violent protests couldn't budge.

If nothing else it would've made them feel way more awkward about denying his application
