At least in my circle there was a very intense reaction of "Wait that's it?!" while reading the final book that left people with this distinct uneasiness they tried to suppress for the sake of staying in the fandom

Middle of the 6th book at latest. And fandom was working overtime to compensate before then, which is one reason why it was so... shall we say... epic.

Agreed. Book 6. I was so confused by all the "she's a REAL AUTHOR NOW" press. I don't even think I remember book 7, except for the epilogue.

Middle of the 4th book. That's the one where Harry Potter was already becoming a Phenomenon and editors suddenly were reluctant to touch anything Rowling wrote. You can tell just from the page counts.
