But the original creator of the show, Joan Ganz Cooney, originally wanted to call it "123 Avenue B" and set it in Alphabet City But then she dropped that and all other overly specific references because she wanted the show to feel universal and not aimed at New Yorkers

I guess the geographical humor with calling it "Avenue Q" is that they're actually living across the river from Alphabet City in Brooklyn but trying to pretend they're still in Manhattan? I dunno I don't actually live in New York

The first season was filmed on the edge of Hell's Kitchen, at an ex-CBS studio that was gifted to ETMA/WNDT/NET on 9th and 55th, followed by another ex-CBS studio on the Upper West Side (81st and Broadway) for decades after.
