Well, it's literally in Queens, as in it's filmed at a studio in Astoria But it'd make sense for them to have generally based it on the area

Oh apparently there's some actual discourse about this The show's original art designer said he was thinking the Upper West Side, the original set has a copy of the subway stop on 72nd Street

But the original creator of the show, Joan Ganz Cooney, originally wanted to call it "123 Avenue B" and set it in Alphabet City But then she dropped that and all other overly specific references because she wanted the show to feel universal and not aimed at New Yorkers

I guess the geographical humor with calling it "Avenue Q" is that they're actually living across the river from Alphabet City in Brooklyn but trying to pretend they're still in Manhattan? I dunno I don't actually live in New York
