Buying a large and impressive personal collection of hardcover physical books is difficult for a poor person to do, as is having the time and energy to read them It's a social class signifier

It's always kind of weird when people talk about a poor person owning a big TV like it's a constant drain on finances. I mean, sure, Netflix might cost money but once the TV's there, the TV itself doesn't cost anything more than slightly upping your hydro bill.
-
But they're mostly just trying to make it a thing about like, "how dare poor people not live in constant deprivation at all times, how dare they have the temerity to want to take their mind off their situation sometimes!"

I love books, but the entertainment cost of books is far more per hour than that of tv. & yes, libraries, but that takes time, an even scarcer resource if you’re poor.
-
If you consider the alternative of borrowing the same book from the public library for free, you're not even paying for the entertainment. You're just paying for the ability to show it off and the convenience of having it available whenever you might want to read it again.
