I hate this reverse causation shit Someone with a small apartment without much stuff in it but a TV is probably poor yes That is a cost-effective way to spend your money and time on entertainment when you are poor That's all the explanation you need

Turning it into a culture war thing - "This attitude is WHY you're poor" - just makes you an asshole

Buying a large and impressive personal collection of hardcover physical books is difficult for a poor person to do, as is having the time and energy to read them It's a social class signifier

I wish I had the SPACE for more books.

TVs used to be an investment. Now they’ve reached a level pace where they are both exponentially larger, lighter and cheaper.

Or maybe more accurately, they're cheaper per hour of entertainment. Buying a load of books will run me several hundred or thousand dollars, and the majority I'll only be able to read once or twice. A decent TV costs $500 and will entertain me as long as I pay $15/mo Netflix.
