I think the main difference between Sam and the Flag Smashers isn't their ideology or even their approach, but that the Flag Smashers seem to haven fallen into the ideological pit-trap of thinking the case makes itself, where Sam knows he still needs to make an argument.

And because they think their argument is self-evident from their actions, they have nothing to do *but* escalate because either it means they just haven't demonstrated hard enough, or people are willfully choosing to defy them despite knowing better.

Like at no point does Karli show nearly enough self-awareness to frame this as an intended outcome, and if her attack had won it would've made things so, so much worse.
