You know if you think Wyatt Russell getting death threats from fans with a weak grasp on reality is messed up imagine being Aya Cash after playing Stormfront on The Boys All these people screaming "YOU NAZI BITCH" at, you know, a Jewish actress

I do think an interesting parallel with Stormfront and US Agent is the slow burn Like if you really want to make people hate a fictional character to an irrational level you don't make them a bad guy to start out with You make it "ambiguous"

You make the audience feel like "Wait am I supposed to put up with this person? Is this supposed to be acceptable behavior? Is everyone else seeing what I'm seeing?" and let their objections build up over time

Like if the show started out saying "This is Evil Captain America" or "This is Hot Girl Hitler" people would just be like "Oh this actor is playing a bad guy" and it wouldn't be a big deal It's the slow burn reveal that drives people into a frenzy

"She's a bad guy! Can anyone else not see she's a bad guy?! Stop telling me she's a good guy, show! STOP IT" This is why this kind of fan hate develops so much more strongly with a serial TV show than a movie or something

Once or twice a year I think about my junior year of high school, when our drama club staged “Merchant of Venice” and “Playing for Time.” So many Jewish kids playing antisemites (and the victims of antisemitism too).
