I saw an interesting interview with her where she said ironically playing this character made her talk and think about her Jewish identity more than she had in years, because it was suddenly super relevant to every single fan interaction she was having

I do think an interesting parallel with Stormfront and US Agent is the slow burn Like if you really want to make people hate a fictional character to an irrational level you don't make them a bad guy to start out with You make it "ambiguous"

You make the audience feel like "Wait am I supposed to put up with this person? Is this supposed to be acceptable behavior? Is everyone else seeing what I'm seeing?" and let their objections build up over time

Like if the show started out saying "This is Evil Captain America" or "This is Hot Girl Hitler" people would just be like "Oh this actor is playing a bad guy" and it wouldn't be a big deal It's the slow burn reveal that drives people into a frenzy

"She's a bad guy! Can anyone else not see she's a bad guy?! Stop telling me she's a good guy, show! STOP IT" This is why this kind of fan hate develops so much more strongly with a serial TV show than a movie or something

What compels a person to do this?

In the interview I watched she was very gracious about it Saying it's a compliment to the power of the writing and to her ability as an actor And you can't really get too mad at people for being a little overly invested in TV in 2020

This isn't a new thing. For instance Larry Hagman mentioned that fans have occasionally had altercations (even attempted slaps) with him simply because they hated his "JR" character so much.

Russell got death threats? What the heck? He's an actor! On a show. It's not real! How is that difficult for people to grasp?
