I love that podcast Aimee Mann did chatting with Rebecca Sugar about the art of songwriting And throwing this subtle shade "You realize no one ever says 'tonic and gin', and the reversal doesn't actually have any artistic meaning It's just what we call a 'cram'"https://twitter.com/TJFlamson/status/1385412361477967879 …

I hate this song with the heat of a 1000 suns so I always gotta boost American Pie hate. And then add my own: Rye is a kind of whisky, Don, you smug little asshole. It's like saying "drinking milk and skim"! What the hell?! Fucking boomers https://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1385411241481367553 …

I mean Aimee Mann is obviously a genius but I think she’s wrong on this one. The reversal puts emphasis on gin, at the end of the line, and the point is not just the alcoholism but the kind of alcoholism for which mixers are the barest fig leaf.

I guess she is wrong in that the line from American Pie is even worse than she's making it out to be because it's like saying "Drinking gin and dry gin"

"whisky" (no 'e') and "rye" are definitely two separate drinks in the broader "whiskey" (with an 'e') family (along with "bourbon" and "scotch").

Well, in the sense that people get aggressive about the shibboleth that whether it has an "e" or not depends on where it comes from And "rye whiskey" is mostly an American tradition so you wouldn't find "rye whisky" (although Wikipedia tells me Canadian "rye whisky" exists)

I mean, i'm not aggressive about it, but i do think the spelling distinction matters. And rye whiskey and bourbon whiskey are definitely distinct styles from both Scotch and Irish whisky.

Yeah but some guy in the South isn't going to be drinking Scottish whisky along with American rye whiskey And you wouldn't say it like that if you were Also Ireland is one of the countries that spells it "whiskey"

          Replying to @arthur_affect @iridienne and

Traditionally American and Irish "whiskey" have the E, the mnemonic is supposed to be "If the country has an E in the name then so does the whiskey" Really it's because spelling it with the E is an Irish thing and Irish immigrants dominated American whiskey-making
