To an extent - Cobra Kai talks about nostalgia and how different poeple remember traumatic events differently. I don't think it quite lands that message though. That said, similarly Johnny Lawrence is trapped in his own nostalgia as he refuses to grow.

(To an extent, so is Danny, who is the bully for the first couple of seasons and lacks the self-awareness)

It's funny to me how wildly implausible Johnny's character is, he literally doesn't own a computer or smartphone and has never used the Internet The whole world has left him behind since his disastrous defeat in 1984

I was talking to
@Nymphomachy about how much they show Johnny has changed since he was a kid Like in the original movie he seemed smart enough, he was the socially adept cool kid compared to Danny, he was a rich kid who hung out at the country club and had expensive tastes2 replies 0 retweets 2 likes -

He wasn't *born* this caricature of a working-class dirtbag who eats expired bologna out of the frying pan and drinks Coors Banquet at every occasion Somehow he *became* that Sometimes a hard enough kick in the head changes a man

(In all seriousness, it's a 30-year gap He's had almost twice as many years alive in his life of alcoholism, depression and grinding poverty as he'd been alive when he was the high-flying golden boy Danny met An extremely depressing meditation on the passage of time)

I mean the implication is his stepdad dropped him, but kept giving him loans/supporting him which hurt Johnny's own sense of self. Basically the loss hurt him so much he never recovered.

Well yeah and he was a hard partying YOLO alcoholic and drug user in his 20s who got in constant fights and had his head kicked many more times

Who freaked out and desperately tried to get his act together when he knocked up his girlfriend and had a shotgun wedding But predictably crashed and burned (the story about his mom dying just before his wife was due to give birth and him vanishing to go on a bender)

Cf @Nymphomachy'description of no longer holding actual hostility for her biodad, just a vaguely disgusted pity for him, and resentment at her biomom for letting him cum in her

Seriously, I'm surprised how much character work went into the bible of what is essentially a joke pitch.

The first episode of the show follows the Breaking Bad formula of "I'm gonna make you feel as bad for this guy as it's possible to feel, just to create that first impression Cause he's gonna do some fucked up shit later on and you're still gonna be on his side"
