Regardless of whether or not the X-Men will ever be in the MCU, I do kind of wonder if adamantium, the metal, will ever be canon

I mean in the comics it's just a mixed alloy of vibranium and iron so like in theory you should already be able to make it if you're in the MCU

Adamantium is not, in fact, made from vibranium (this is a common misconception) Captain America's shield in the comics is a completely unique alloy made from vibranium and ordinary steel, and as a result is truly completely indestructible and has never been duplicated

Dr. Myron McLain made the shield by accident in the lab after falling asleep in the lab, and was unable to duplicate the formula because it used up his only sample of vibranium

McLain then went on to try to duplicate the shield's properties *without* the use of vibranium as his life's great work Adamantium is the result of this research (and the one thing we know about its secret formula is it *doesn't* contain vibranium)

Although the comics have been wildly inconsistent about this over time, and have created numerous "variants" of both vibranium and adamantium to explain the discrepancies, the hierarchy goes: Captain America's shield ("true adamantium") > adamantium > vibranium

Anyway, unless they actually literally do a crossover with the X-Men movies, they're unlikely to get very deeply into this in the MCU, considering the MCU just says the shield is made of regular vibranium They *may* say it about Wolverine's claws because they're iconic, idk

Note that this is actually an explicit difference in the MCU -- in Endgame, a non-gauntleted Thanos breaks the shield with a regular blow from his sword (presumably made vibranium or other special space metal)

In the comics, Captain America's shield breaking is always an extremely big fucking deal involving some kind of cosmic reality warping Thanos was able to shatter it only by punching it with the Infinity Gauntlet (as a demonstration of the Gauntlet's omnipotence)

There's a really cool moment in the What If? where Reed Richards is too late and Galactus succeeds in eating Earth Captain America says he'll stand up to him with nothing but his strength and his shield and Galactus scoffs, picks up him and crushes him in his fist

And with the Power Cosmic Steve Rogers is instantly annihilated, but the shield remains And Galactus goes "What -- this shield -- strange -- " and holds the tiny thing between the tips of his fingers and thumbs and tries vainly to bend it in half

"Curious... well, no matter" And flicks it away into the stars It's a pretty awesome note for giving the Marvel universe this bittersweet tragic ending
