But I think that's what made it work. Seeing a fantasy on what's it would be like if sexism wasn't a thing felt kinda nice...like a futuristic world we want to aspire to, only set in the past. You wouldn't say Star Trek soft-pedals the future, would you? (Maybe you would, idk...)
