Like this guy was probably MORE AWARE of racism in the '90s than he is now -- there's no way he could've NEVER HEARD OF the OJ Simpson trial or the LA riots, especially if he's a gangsta rap fan -- and he's just erased it from his memory so he can better enjoy his nostalgia

I mean he's not special, our culture does this all the time Cf. the people pointing out the wave of '80s nostalgia Stranger Things rode in on cleaned up the actual '80s a lot

Made it seem like racism wasn't much of a thing, group of white kids with one Black friend is normal (much like the idealized diverse friend groups they made up in the actual '80s)

I know right? Like I knew some stuff was screwed up, but it’s not like 1985-1997 was some magic time. There was stuff I missed back then and realize now was messed up. And undoubtably even more that was screwed up but I can’t reconstruct with an adult POV after the fact.

I really can't understand that .. just.. it seems a horrible way to go through life, never actually growing or seeing yourself as a piece of the world.

Kids' awareness of anything was constantly being dulled by white supremacist culture shaping and censoring narratives of white culpability I knew some things were going on, but unless your cohort was experiencing it first hand it was like convincing someone you had seen a ghost.

Wait this is how people believe “you become more conservative as you get older”, isn't it?!
-
That, and people (previously) on average getting richer as they age, and poorer people more likely to stay less conservative tending to die younger
