This isn't a criticism, since I have no great attachment to the original show, but the new Kung Fu has pretty much nothing to do with the David Carradine show other than being about kung fu, huh

It's just interesting looking at how much it's, like, completely the opposite of the original show's concept It's a family drama about a close-knit Asian-American community in a big city Rather than this one lone guy wandering the wilderness as an eternal outsider

I mean, the CW just got done with Supernatural and maybe they're tired of stories of people with no friends and family wandering around America anonymously righting wrongs Still and all

I have a sense that a lot of the new Asian-centered properties coming out lately have this whole "For Asians, FAMILY is EVERYTHING" angle and while I'm not like opposed to that I find it vaguely annoying

It's that thing where yes I find it problematic that the random Asian in the cast of an action movie is a taciturn loner with no friends but I always find such characters highly relatable

Yeahhhhh......vaguely stereotypical and too much like a lot of other stories being told by Asian American storytellers these days. Could use from fresh approaches (but that won't happen until you get multiple successes).

Ironically, the main Asian guy in The Fast and the Furious franchise is like the one long lived character who is kind of a loner and isn’t the real Mi Familia guy.

Fwiw, in the original Kung Fu series, Kane's primary mission is his search for his family, particularly hHis brother. Another example of "family is everything."

Okay but this is mostly what TVTropes calls an "Excuse Plot"

I did relate more to my Asian friends than my WASP friends when talking about family, me being from a large Italian Catholic family, and ended up at a Korean church for awhile. They understood a lot better what I now recognize was pretty toxic, 😂

I think part of it is it treats Asian people as a monolith. And sure there are some similarities, but there are similarities between Italians and Germans, yet we only refer to them as European if we're talking general origins and stuff like that.

One of my favorite bits in the movie Falling Down is when a Korean store owner, Mr. Lee, is at the police station speaking Korean and the Robert Duvall character asks an Asian detective what he's saying.
