This is 100% the result of the automatic authority people give a badge If one of the random adults standing around had pulled out a pistol and shot the girl to save the other one's life there's no way they'd be getting this kind of support

So actually what you just described is lawful. Defense of another.

My guess is that this is both lawful, and in accordance with the police training. And still wrong, because it leads to an unnecessary death in a situation which almost certainly could have been de-escalated and ended with nothing more than minor injuries, or possibly no injury.

The problem is not an individual bad choice by the officer (though I expect many more experienced officers would have handled a fight between teenage girls very differently), but police culture and training which encourages and excuses quick escalation and neglects other ways.

You must not do use of force cases.

If your point is that the use of force was legal, then I'm not disagreeing with you. It's legal. I'm saying that isn't the end of the discussion - in a situation where police may legally use lethal force, there may be other options which give better outcomes.

Me? Nothing I have no training, so even though I'm probably stronger than the girl with the knife the safest thing is to let the situation play out

No not you. You are not claiming you have it all figured out. You sensibly realize this.

It's interesting watching videos of UK police - they attract the attention of the person with the knife, but stay out of reach and back away repeatedly while trying to talk to them and get them to drop the knife. If all that fails, then they may use a Taser.

It seems a big contrast with US police, who mostly draw a weapon - usually gun, sometimes Taser, confront and not back away, then shoot/Taser as soon as there's an aggressive move.
