I know this is extremely hot-takey but fuck it All the good liberal Americans who think "Well if there's someone going after someone else with a knife, of course a cop has to open fire" are the reason we got into a disastrous war in Iraq

I guess this is the obligatory part where I say that yes, I, personally, have been threatened with a knife by someone having a freakout It was highly unpleasant But, you know, having a cop suddenly shoot the person dead in front of me would not have made me any better off

("Easy for you to say, Arthur, you weren't actually stabbed" Well, sure, I suppose I wasn't killed by a stray bullet from the fourth of four shots being off-target due to recoil either, so)

"we've got to do something!" kneejerks with a(n un)healthy dose of debating Augustine and "just war" theory

I think there was a "This Modern World" comic about this. Sadly, I can't find it because I can't remember which US intervention it was referencing. But the "joke" was going into an area with conflict and shooting everyone didn't actually make things better.

Arthur I love you but no. We did not invade Iraq out of the goodness of our hearts. We did it because we were told there was a threat to us. It is exceedingly difficult to get the United States to play hero. We do not do it. It has happened twice in my lifetime.

I think those are the only two times it has truly happened. In Bosnia, because Bob Dole gave Clinton political cover to do the right thing. In Libya, because we were obliged by NATO treaty. So I dunno if that really counts. Every other intervention was done for self interest.
