Yeah I read this annoying business advice book a long time ago by this guy who talked about watching his kids fight over their Power Rangers toys His son insisted they were "action figures" and his daughter said they were "dolls"

And the dude said "Ironically, I was one of the marketers involved in the first meetings we had with execs at Hasbro where we were trying to make the term 'action figure' happen with GI Joe Not to bore my kids or you with the history but it took decades"

I’m a 1969 baby. The toy catalogues we looked at as children def took a turn for the worse in the 80s. The whole pink & blue division came about then. Sell double the toys if ppl have a daughter & a son. Brutal

Me too! And it was odd to realize that this was a more gender neutral time for children. I mean, the adults were telling me I could "choose" to have a career or be a mother. If I hadn't been growing up in a wealthy town, I wouldn't have gotten that much.

We've definitely gone backwards on a lot of shit culturally since the 70s, especially when it comes to how willing the 2nd wave was to challenge "motherhood" as an ideal The Cult of the Mother came *roaring* back

You straight up could not make Rosemary's Baby today ("The pregnancy is evil and cursed and the righteous quest is to abort it") Or Kramer vs Kramer ("The mom learns she's not cut out to be a custodial parent and there's nothing wrong with that and lets the dad take the kid")

Oh- I always thought that movie vilified the mom

Something that bothers me when I think back on it is that I was around 10, budding feminist. And it caused me to say things like "Of course I'm worried about prejudice against men too." like that was a real thing.

Oh- the cool girl speech in Gone Girl hit me in the solar plexus bc yeah, I fell for the You’re not like other girls bs for awhile when young. I feel like the 90s existed to beat all the 70s ideals out of me

"You're so damn hard to please We gotta kill this switch You're from the 70s But I'm a 90s bitch" - Icona Pop, "I Love It" (released 2012, by artists born in 1986 and 1987)
