I don't know exactly when the term "action figure" got established but it was after this

They don't bring it up directly in the movie but it's notable that in Toy Story Woody is a "doll" and Buzz is an "action figure" Woody's body is soft fabric and Buzz's is hard plastic

Yeah I read this annoying business advice book a long time ago by this guy who talked about watching his kids fight over their Power Rangers toys His son insisted they were "action figures" and his daughter said they were "dolls"

And the dude said "Ironically, I was one of the marketers involved in the first meetings we had with execs at Hasbro where we were trying to make the term 'action figure' happen with GI Joe Not to bore my kids or you with the history but it took decades"

I’m a 1969 baby. The toy catalogues we looked at as children def took a turn for the worse in the 80s. The whole pink & blue division came about then. Sell double the toys if ppl have a daughter & a son. Brutal

The evolution of the easy-bake oven is illustrative in this regard I think.

The biggest dunk on Easy Bake Ovens was just "Why spend all this money on a tiny fake oven, if you want your kid to learn to cook have them help out in the kitchen for real"

But of course that sucks because then your parents are aware of how many cookies you make and can prevent you from going on to eat them all yourself

The wild thing is that the Easy-Bake oven is the final form of a history of tiny functional ovens to teach children to cook dating back at least to the victorian era. They used to make TINY COAL-POWERED STOVES FOR KIDS.

(Though it's debated I think which are legit toys and which are functional miniatures used as salesmans' samples)
