I don't know exactly when the term "action figure" got established but it was after this
-
-
"Obviously, the basic definition of an action figure is that it's the same thing as a doll, but marketed to avoid the stigma around dolls so boys would buy them The distinction is arbitrary But you can't say that to a couple of kids"
-
"Especially when they can clearly see the two are identical except for their color So I did the only thing I could do 'Billy, your Power Ranger is an action figure, because it's red Tina, your Power Ranger is a doll, because it's pink'"

I’m a 1969 baby. The toy catalogues we looked at as children def took a turn for the worse in the 80s. The whole pink & blue division came about then. Sell double the toys if ppl have a daughter & a son. Brutal

Me too! And it was odd to realize that this was a more gender neutral time for children. I mean, the adults were telling me I could "choose" to have a career or be a mother. If I hadn't been growing up in a wealthy town, I wouldn't have gotten that much.
