The fact that people think this kind of thing is even *on the table* as an option for "how to deal with climate change" is a nontrivial factor in dooming us allhttps://twitter.com/AstroKatie/status/1384566609331822594 …

I kind of like flooding the Qattara Depression just because it'd be interesting
-
Well that is it. Two items that were discussed in my Climatology class in 1978-79 at UC Berkeley. The Qatar depression is an interesting case. Because of evaporation you can run turbines to generate electricity. Problem. Millions of mines from WW2. A-Bombs were proposed.

I mean the advantage of terraforming is that when we try it and fail, the planet we turn into a lifeless wasteland was already a lifeless wasteland.
-
And by then, so will ours. It is lose-lose.

This was also one of the many problems with the premise of "Interstellar". I don't care how bad things are...there's no conceivable way that "use a wormhole in spacetime to colonize a planet in a different galaxy using fertilized eggs" is more practical than "clean up Earth."
-
And seriously...was Anne Hathaway seriously supposed to feed, nurse & otherwise care for several thousand test tube babies by herself on a planet without any electricity, buildings, running water, etc other than some high-tech incubators she had stashed on the ship?

This is why M*sk's interest in Mars drives me crazy. He and his fans seem like they've given up on Earth as a place for diseased peasants. (Side note: why are we skipping the moon? Even as a proof of concept it'd be a lot more accessible as a colony)

I’ve been surprised how the notion of terraforming has persisted in recent SF given what we’ve come to understand about geoengineering the past decade. To liquify a core - and it’s not even that simple - for a magnetosphere... bonkers.

Like I always say, it should be blatantly obvious that it would be easier to "terraform" earth by not ruining it with climate change than making a different planet habitable.

Geoengineering a currently livable planet to make it livable vs geoengineering a currently uninhabitable planet to make it livable Like, we definitely should branch out from one planet, but just the problem statement alone should show how much more difficult the latter is.
