I wonder how much of this is some classist belief that “powerful people” can’t really be bigots? Although using bigotry for political ends is itself bigotry.

It infuriated me whenever Morning Joe or some other white conservative/moderate pundit would lecture us when Trump did something grossly bigoted: “This is just a distraction from Mueller/COVID, whatever."

Also, it ultimately doesn't matter if lawmakers believe in their own transphobia (or homophobia, racism, etc) or are just doing it for political clout. They're still doing it, and obviously don't have enough objection to it to just... y'know... not.

I wish I remember who said it, but it's stuck with me: What happened with the Tea Party was Republicans who thought FOX News was a useful tool were replaced by Republicans who think FOX News is real.
