For what it's worth, Wyatt Russell has said he considers John Walker a fascinating acting challenge because he's "pretty much the opposite of me in every way" Like not just the stuff about murdering peoplehttps://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1384177002735759380 …

You know, culturally he's poles apart from the average Hollywood writer or actor Conservative good ol' boy from a small football town in the South Lemar even ribs him that he "failed drama class" when he was in high school

It would be easy to make fun of someone like that on superficial stuff in a way that comes across as classist punching down and I'm glad they avoided it While still getting across that, you know, this subculture is filled with people who really aren't doing okay

I’m not sure I buy their argument apart from that either. I rewatched the sopranos this past year and it’s pretty clear that Chase hates all his characters and their politics, but they don’t stop being engaging and complex, and it was certainly popular with audiences

George Saunders has said an easy thing to do when writing a story is put in a character you and your presumed audience won’t like (his example was an evangelical) and then add details to make them sympathetic and they will feel rounder

The John Walker stuff in FaWS only works because of the relationship with Lemar Hoskins Taking an unsympathetic character and giving him a relationship that really, really matters to him

And, you know, making it clear that 1) John and Lemar genuinely care about each other very deeply, but also 2) Their relationship isn't anything close to equal, and Lemar does a tremendous amount of emotional labor for John that he can never pay back

They make it as positive and grounded a relationship as they can, but Lemar absolutely is John's sidekick in a way that Sam and Bucky were never Steve's sidekick, and this is why Sam and Bucky are so uncomfortable around the two of them

Lemar is an enabler, he's not just John's friend but his *fan* He sees it as his duty not just to support him but to gas him up, to shield him from criticism, to nurture his fragile ego
