Van Gogh once tried to pay his rent with a painting when he was particularly desperate His landlord used it to repair a hole in a chicken coop

The landlord's ghost has been just sick about it for decades.

I'm kind of obsessed with Van Gogh's story because it just shows how stupid the economics of art are He sold a grand total of one painting in his life, all the other paintings that ended up in other people's possessions are ones he gave away, and now they're all worth millions

He literally gave away all this art to Agostina Segatori "for exposure" And then after they had their falling-out she just kept them up on the walls of the cafe and didn't tell people who painted them (this is how almost all arrangements to do stuff "for exposure" end up)
