The tone of the book is so arch in a way that didn't translate to the film. Kevin Kwan may not have thought his characters were evil, but he did have some contempt for a lot of them.

Yeah I'm actually very frustrated that the original books have WAY more of a satirical social satire tone and the movie is just a straight up old-school Hollywood celebration of opulence and glamor

I have a period 40s dream movie in which the US government recruits Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto and Cato to team up against Fu Manchu. Except this time they cast actual Asians in all the roles.
