The usurper King Henry IV was probably the first King to speak English as his first language. But from the Norman conquest till 1453 there was immense relations between England and its French holdings. And, of course, between its Island neighbors

The Duchy of Lancaster is still a royal Duchy, from Henry VII. Who was descended from Henry V’s French widow and a random Welsh knight. All of this Anglo-Saxon nonsense is such horseshit, even among the Royal lineage in the medieval era.

And that’s not getting into the ducking Queen of England’s ancestry. She’s from an imported German house, and was married to a rando Greek Prince she fell in love with at 13.

Random trivia about Greece: Once in the 19th century it belonged to Bavaria, even before there was an actual Germany

Oh, Greece. Prince Philip’s family is so weird. His mom at least had some good traits, even as his sisters fell in love with fucking Nazis.

To his credit, the man went off and tried to kill Nazis in the war. He was a racist weirdo who cheated on the Queen, but he chose to go to war to try to kill Nazis.

Yes, but did he do it because it was Nazis, or because it was "open season" and hunting foxes bored him or something? I'm not shitting on the aristocrats, I'm just asking que

He went to school in the UK, and became British, basically. He joined the navy in 1939, and I’m sure the weird aristocratic sense of duty and war played a role. But he was a Lt. in the navy in the war, and a legit hero who saved his ship once.

Lots of terrible things about Prince Philip- he was of his age and class, and did not think of everyone as equal human beings. But I respect his willingness to fight in the navy for the entirety of WWII.

The ancient kings of old were supposed to earn their exalted status in battle, and for a while now the British male royals have been pressured to reenact this with military service to lessen the embarrassment of still being bluebloods in this enlightened age

And it’s been sort if roles- it at least gives them an experience that is radically different than their Royal life. Even Prince Charles is an experienced helicopter pilot, and used to fly some of the Queen’s aircrafts. Till he crashed one in 1994. :)
