It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but it's baked into what the whole idea of "King Arthur" is It's like when political cartoonists imagined "Columbia", the anthropomorphic personification of the United States, as a Native woman (in buckskins and whatnot)

AFAIK, Richard I. "LiOnHeArT" groomed that figure myth. And heavily so. Within his day and age there even was an excavation of Arthur's remains *harrumph* forgery *harrumph* The purpose of the stunt? To legitimize Anglo-Saxon hegemony (presence, even) in the British Isles.
