I mean, like, I get that the evidence is that if Jesus was a real person he was probably born some time within a decade on either side of 0 AD but the title very clearly implies that they are trying to stop Jesus from being killed… the year most people believe he inevitably diedhttps://twitter.com/FB_BMB/status/1383500442634620928 …

In case you're not familiar with this one: it is about a bunch of scientists who have to stop Jesus from being assassinated. It is basically God's Not Dead meets The Terminator, and was pretty notorious when it was released last year.

Maybe if he dies a different way, Christians lose a key piece of iconography, which would be bad in the filmmakers world view?

You’re saying Constantine wouldn’t make a muscular robot the symbol of his empire?

Okay, I watched the trailer (which claims this has won more awards for its screenplay from international film festivals then any other film). There’s a line about killing Jesus before the resurrection which seems like you’d need something other then time travel to do though...

I'm trying to understand the theology behind this concept and failing.

I mean, one traditional narrative of how to kill a vampire is that you have to kill them, and THEN drive a stake through their heart, before they regenerate after a certain amount of time That sounds like what “killing Jesus before the resurrection” refers to

Oh I mean of the film itself. Like god is all powerful etc and the resurrection is the crowning jewel of his plan for the universe. Why is he allowing the murders to even travel back in time?

Well obviously the murderers fail and that was also God's plan

But what of free will? If god is leaving it in the hands of humans how can he be sure we won't muck it up?

That’s why the time traveling assassins are a concern, I guess
