The Welsh word" Saesneg" and the Scottish Gaelic equivalent "Sassenach" are used for "English" but literally translated as "Saxon", and is rarely used endearingly.

Didn't realise there was a Welsh version too! I was always told that sassenach referred to anyone born below the Antonine Wall (as opposed to teuchter for the northerners) and I only learned recently about it meaning Saxon. We do love shitting on each other in this country.
