The thing about the "character" of Revan is fans generally reject the actual canon Revan completely (from SWTOR) and substitute in the Revan from their own playthrough of KotOR 1, which stretches the idea of being a character to the limithttps://twitter.com/RowanKaiser/status/1382418832736673793 …

What Revan represents to the player base is a cipher, to an extreme degree, and KotOR 2 was partly popular for respecting that mystery (letting you pick which Revan is canon for your playthrough at the outset)

So the reason Revan is popular is really this idea that Revan represents, which was a big shock when everyone played KotOR 1 but is something you can't really repeat the same way now (the Big Bad and the PC are one and the same)

I've always thought it made more sense that Revan is female and the exile is male, and was a bit miffed when I found out it was the other way around

You can get some pretty great dialogue in 2 with mods. Been using one that overrides the gender marker to male so I can get the handmaiden over disciple. That turns the backstory into a lesbian romance between exile and atris

This one frustrates me a bit because the dark side path had that really silly "be an absolute jerkass to everyone" chaotic stupid style of evil

The funny thing is that we always knew what the canon situation was, because the default Lucasfilm position was "you take the Light side option" in any game where it was possible to choose. They also suggested that if you were told something then it was canon.
