I disagree with conversion therapists about what's going on under the hood in such a scenario -- I think the societal benefit of doing this isn't worth the suffering and trauma it causes But from a black-box perspective of securing compliance, sure, it works just fine

Plenty of trans kids with affirming parents and communities are coming out early in life who, if they'd been born in 1970, likely would've never come out in their entire lives, and just suffered silently with feelings and impulses they didn't know what do with That's good!

The terfs are reminding me of the toxic side of the Behaviorist movement in psychology. The idea was that all behaviour and actions are the result of external stimuli, there's no underlying thought or reasoning behind anything. If someone does something weird, their (con't)

Oh. Great. Now I get to learn about something that makes me upset again. And apparently this is where Cognitive Behavioral Therapy comes from. More upset.

Super frustrating that CBT accidentally can help with some issues despite being rooted in what is at best pseudo-science. Like most of psychology, honestly. The roots, that is.

I love psychology (even have a degree in it) but it's a weird mush of ideas and concepts that aren't backed that well and it wasn't started by the best people. Freud at least kind of cared about traumatized veterans, Jung was a racist who ran a sex cult. But both sucked.

The harshest own I can think of for MBTI isn't even the racist mystery novel that Isabel Briggs-Myers wrote, it's that she had this fan correspondence with Jung that ended with him calling her a dangerous busybody filled with narcissistic hubris

Jung -- CARL Jung -- making this accusation of anyone else And yet he was completely correct (Myers was insistent on applying what she understood of Jung's theories to try to "help" the other neighborhood kids who played with her daughter without their parents' consent)

See if you didn't know what it was about you could call this an arrogant male scholar dismissing the idea a mere sheltered American housewife could understand his ideas And I guess it was that But he was, you know, correct

He really tears into her in that last letter about how only someone with this childlike, grotesquely oversimplified view of the human condition -- with no sense of the darkness in the abyss at the center of the human heart -- would mess around with other people's minds so lightly

And, like, looking at the MBTI version of pop psychology, this is... a completely accurate assessment (A good way to troll MBTI types is to ask, like, what MBTI type various famous serial killers were and how their type explains their pattern and method of killing)

Anyway this is a tangent but it's absolutely hilarious how to this day the MBTI people use "It's based in Jungian psychology!" to make their dumb personality quiz sound more sophisticated, when the last letter Jung ever wrote to Myers said "You must stop all of this at once"
