BTW "three Medals of Honor" isn't ridiculous in quite the same way as Bruce Banner's "seven PhDs" but it is pretty ridiculous

It's theoretically possible, in the sense that the DoD (ultimately the President) has the right to give out the MoH as they see fit, but no one in history (as they outright say on the show) has ever gotten three and the last people to get two were from World War I

And the reason people used to have two is because the regulations around giving it out used to be way more loosey-goosey and they tightened them up precisely to prevent devaluing medals through decoration inflation

Like back in the Civil War you would have high ranking officers go "Listen whoever volunteers for this mission and survives, I promise I'll recommend you for the Medal of Honor", which is the kind of thing now frowned upon

A bunch of the people who got two MoHs did so on a technicality, it was one MoH that got bureaucratically duplicated

Technically the Dept. of the Army and the Dept. of the Navy have two different Medals of Honor So a Marine who got decorated for an action taken during a joint operation with the Army would get decorated by both services They closed this loophole after WWI

There are people who legitimately got two Medals of Honor for two separate actions but the way the military works nowadays this would be very unlikely to recur

Dan Daly got one for fighting the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 and a second one during the occupation of Haiti in 1915 The idea of someone still serving in frontline combat actions today 15 years after getting the Medal of Honor is ridiculous

(And they recommended him for a third MoH for actions in WWI but, probably conscious that this would be the equivalent of saying he was a better soldier than any other soldier who ever lived, they decided to make it the Distinguished Service Criss)

Incidentally, the DSC is what I thought they should have gone with when I saw this theme.

It’s especially rare in the 21st century to award the Medal of Honor. Only six servicemen have received it for actions in the Iraq War, four posthumously.

I wonder if this might even add more color to the hypocrisy/grayness in-universe, in that maybe they made a point to award him so many MoHs because they were about to give him the shield and deep down he knows those are political medals and it eats away at him.
