This may just be a me thing, but I've been disappointed by a few of the historical/contemporary fantasy books I've picked up lately because they seem to have an inexplicable Our World, But Magic Is Overt And Commonplace vibe to them, and that just ... doesn't work for me

I know it's set in the early 90s but even a single telephone landline or computerized library card catalog would have wiped out like 67% of the plot

I mean it's also weird generally that magic messes with electricity. That should have a whole host of other effects. The behavior of electrons is pretty fundamental to how reality works. If they just stopped behaving predictably you're going to have...some issues.

The only way it really makes sense is if some mildly malevolent force/entity decided to create this one specific interaction just to screw with wizards.
