I think actors take these roles for two reasons: one, they have to work and it's not at-all guaranteed that they'll get high-profile roles in the future. And two, they see some of these roles as a chance for nominations because this is what critics value.

And critics indirectly set market value on actors, so for some, it's seen as a necessity to raising their career.

Great acting challenge should be like "portray gay civil war vets who become cannibals and critique manifest destiny" or "grapple with a complex human portrayal of a misunderstood period or people", not "just do offensive pop psychology"

Rich, famous people are still rich people and will still almost always grow more and more insensitive even if they seemed great to begin with. I'm glad I wasn't ever into this one, but not looking forward to all the stans making excuses because they don't care about ableism.
