I mean, yeah, and *ultimately* so is every single other aspect of gender This is why I say that the "TE" in "TERF" wasn't inevitable, the bare statement "Sexism being the way it is is rooted in how babies are made" is clearly true, I just don't draw the same conclusions from it

This is the whole thing -- "The world sucks for women because women are the 'weaker sex'" is this basic concept that infuses everyone's thinking about sex and gender You don't have to be a TERF to have that as part of your worldview

And that core TERF idea- that the oppression of women is rooted in biology- is fundamentally a surrender to patriarchy. If the oppression of women is a function of biology, then it is, bar extensive population-scale genetic engineering, impossible to end the oppression of women.

See, Shulamith Firestone was the one person who followed the logic to its end -- if the core of oppression is rooted in biology, then fucking change the biology, cybernation now Which is why she's the best of the old school radfems, and the one the TERFs have most fully buried

The surrender of genuine, committed radical feminism to outright cultural feminism is laid out in black and white in Jane Clare Jones' ridiculous hippie rants about Male Science vs. Female Nature

Not just the typical TERF rant that transhumanism is a pipe dream used to derail organizing for better conditions for women now (which is an argument I can at least respect) But that IF transhumanism WERE possible, it would be EVIL

"If you could end the need for menstruation and gestation and all the unpleasant side effects of 'female' biology and grow babies in vats... you shouldn't That would be inherently evil It would be a genocide of women by destroying the meaning of womanhood"

A common enough opinion in the '70s and '80s, sure, but one that seems to me to be deeply fucked up Who the fuck has the right to tell another person they HAVE TO menstruate even if they don't want to because that's solidarity or whatever

Connie Willis wrote a whole-ass story about this, "Even the Queen" -- one that jumped the boundaries of the science fiction genre she normally wrote in and got noticed by academic feminists And one that sounds really fucking silly when you read it today

Because it feels like it's dunking on such a strawman (because "libfem" attitudes have advanced so much in our society) "What the hell made-up bad-guy social movement has Willis invented, that says that having periods is some kind of religious moral duty on the part of women"

But y'know As Jane Clare Jones helpfully reminds us all You cannot kill an idea (I hate how in movies and comic books and shit they always say this like it's a cool, good, positive thing about the world we live in)
