I mean yeah Sam, I agree, blowing up buildings with civilian workers inside is a very bad method We're all in agreement out here, those of us who aren't members of fictional villainous terrorist orgs So, like, what IS a good method

Because you don't actually have a "better method" You're in a very sympathetic struggle against everyday racism from cops and banks and whatnot But you're not doing ANYTHING to fight them

You're always about to start considering doing something about it and then you get interrupted by cartoon bad guys for an action fight scene

Which is EXACTLY what Karli was OBVIOUSLY about to say to Sam as a rebuttal to his point, before their conversation was, predictably, interrupted by an action fight scene

imagine living in this kind of world whenever you're on the verge of saying something thought-provoking and important, bad guys kick in the door and you have a fight scene it would get weird and unnerving after a while

I think this is literally how both Dark City and The Matrix work

At the very least the Matrix still functions as saying *something*, whereas the latest marvel joint will ultimately discard any valid argument the villains make and just say "hey don't hurt anybody :)"

I mean yeah I'm saying in light of how action movies clichés work the conceit of both these movies is a meta joke about the genre

Dark City is more explicitly "noir" and no less a master of the noir/hardboiled genre than Raymond Chandler said whenever the mystery plot starts to drag and you don't know what happens next just have someone burst through the door and start shooting

This was a thing in Inception too Whenever you start making the dreamer uncomfortable and start questioning the nature of the world they live in, the various figments populating the dream will suddenly start turning hostile and morphing into armed thugs who shoot at you

Of course we had a previous discussion about how Dark City and The Matrix are both trans movies *browsing forums in 1998* "Funny, this description of dysphoria sounds a lot like how I've felt since -- HOLY SHIT" *window shatters in hail of gunfire*

Wow it seems sorta similar... Almost like I shoved myself into books and combat games in order to make myself not think about the thing I was suppressing. Like maaaaybe the villain in the piece is me as well? ;P
