He starts off playing the role of the New Captain America as well as you could reasonably expect someone to But he is playing a role, and if you knew the real Steve you can tell

(He pushes it too far when he says that he feels like he knew Steve and that he and Steve are brothers in spirit just from reading about him and shit That was when he permanently moved onto Bucky's shitlist)

I've only seen to the second episode so far, but it feels also significant that Steve was an emergent hero, and Walker is a *manufactured* one. like, he's not a latently a bad man. But he's been permanently condemned to try to play-act Steve by a government that wants a symbol.

This is why
@Nymphomachy would like this show I think One of the big themes of it is the internecine conflict between the very different sides of "Veteran Twitter"1 reply 0 retweets 12 likes -

And I think that Walker's bosses are really to blame for this as much as he is. I don't think Walker's *inherently* a bad man. It's not a case of "you silly college-educated elite scum can't understand real heroics!" It's that Walker can't be the same kind of hero.

I keep coming back to the old parable in Jewish rabbinical thought about how a rich man MUST ACT LIKE A RICH MAN, he can't just pretend ascetic poverty in an attempt to be pious. Because he's not poor, and all his play-acting poverty will do is deafen his compassion to the poor.

Walker shouldn't be trying to *deny* his privileged, officer experience as a soldier, he should be owning it, accepting his privileged status & better education and using it for good to help those w/o. It's a sort of false populism American conservative elites just fuckin' LOVE.

But his bosses want him to be a Steve They Can Control, and part of that whole mythos is that Steve was a Little Guy. He wasn't an elite with a true respect for the value of power and his obligations to the downtrodden. And Walker *should be*, but gets told he's a Little Guy.

I think the guy making the speech introducing him is supposed to be the Secretary of Defense but for the new part they're keeping the current President and Cabinet mysteriously offscreen
