Wal-mart having forced the closure of so many local businesses in small towns makes boycotts incredibly difficult. When they're the only option for 20 miles, people simply can't afford the trip to avoid them.

It's almost like walmart has a monopoly in a lot of markets and people literally can't live without giving them business.

If I boycott Walmart, I very likely lose access to critical meds. Soooooo yeah.

and it’s very deliberate. they’ve horizontally integrated so that for many rural communities its the ONLY place to shop within 50 miles. so its impossible to boycott, and anyone who calls for one comes off as a dick despite good intentions

That's my situation. Outside of a dollar store with a freezer section, the closest "grocery store" to me is a Wal-Mart Supercenter that is a half-hour-one-way drive to the closest large town. Boycotting Wal-Mart would make my life even harder than it already is.

We have a cultural obsession with Chick Fil-A’s proximity to hate but absolutely ignore how pervasive these actions are. As a tech worker, I’m not oblivious to the fact it’s sometimes our own employers or CEOs making these donations...

I don’t patronize either one, and haven’t for 30+ years.

I absolutely don't understand why Walmart would do this either. What could they possibly get out of it?

With the question "why does (absurdly rich person/company) do (horrible thing)?", the most common answer is "because they can get away with it".
