Okay. Clear it up then. Is it defined by gametes, or is it defined by whatever you meant by "development"? Or are those the same thing, and you were being deliberately unclear for some reason?

It's gametes, but if gametes are not present we can determine sex by looking at other factors of development that differ between the sexes. We would look into why there are no gametes and diagnose from there. Is it because of a VSD, or another issue? Most people have gametes.

This is like a twitter length answer. But if you are interested, sex development is a really interesting subject.
@zaelefty has made some accessible videos explaining it better than I can in a tweet.1 reply 0 retweets 12 likes -

Lol yeah, the architect speaking on behalf of a fake institute talking as if he were an authority on a subject he's not educated in. I've seen his video. Why not listen to an actual biologist instead?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szf4hzQ5ztg …

So around 6 minutes in he says all the big words that mean we are a two sex species with two different sized gametes and that our sexes look moderately different, before going on to talk about other species. I will watch the rest at some point.

OK so around 21 minutes he says "literally having a female brain trapped inside a male body" So, a male body then? Wouldn't the "female" brain structure just be one of those many variations of a male body that he was talking about earlier? The body is still male. Anyhoo.

My brain is me. Me and my brain are one and the same. If my brain were female, I would be female. The body is just a meat mech, and can and should be altered in accordance with the needs and health of the brain.

Your brain is an organ, one structure among many that is part of your body. It is true the thing we think of as “I” is being carried around by our body, but that is an illusion. A powerful illusion, but still an illusion.

"Your brain is an organ, one structure among" I love this take! It's just an organ, a brain transplant - if it could be done - wouldn't change anything, just like a kidney transplant doesn't!

That sketch from Monty Python and the Meaning of Life where they spend a whole musical number singing about how big the universe is and how many stars there are in the galaxy and as a result go "Well... can we have your liver?" "Oh, all right, you convinced me"
