Anyone, TERF or not, who uses the phrase "just adopt" does not know what they are talking about and should shut the fuck up "Just adopt" is a telltale phrase of someone who wants a dismissive gotcha argument and has NEVER actually researched adoptionhttps://twitter.com/Slatzism/status/1379119773758423043 …

HOT TAKE ALERT: If you can't have kids (for whatever reason) and you choose to spend huge amounts of time and money on either treatments or renting a woman's womb rather than just adopting a child in need -- you are a narcissist.

Adoption is *also* outsourcing the reproductive labour to someone else, it's just that society has classified that someone else as a "failed parent" so that makes it fine or something

Private infant adoption in the US is exploitative as fuck - abusive CPCs exist to feed into it - and is in no way filling any kind of social need - the instant a pregnant person lets it be known they're in the market for adoption the line stretches around the block

And people who know this and see the international market as an alternative should know that the reason so many countries have tightened up on this since the 2000s is it's impossible to disentangle from outright child-buying scandals

Adopting orphans from other countries isn't really "easier" because those countries just have such shitty parents that orphanages are full It's because families in other countries have much weaker legal protections against Americans acting across borders

I have no problem saying that surrogacy is fundamentally more ethical and it doesn't matter how many horror stories you bring up

Even the worst case scenario of "renting someone's womb", as they put it, is still fundamentally more ethical and less damaging than the infant adoption industry's behavior of hovering over poor families waiting for someone to fuck up and create a situation to exploit

And many of the birth parents in these countries are deceived as to the nature of the orphanage - they believe their child is at some kind of boarding school

Often they don’t understand the nature of the contracts they sign - whether because they are illiterate or the contract is in English or another colonial or national language they can’t read or because it’s full of sneaky legalese. So they waive parental rights w/out knowing it.
