Whatever Joel had it coming for, it wasn't anything he actually did during TLOU1 He did do some highwayman shit prior to the events of that game but none of Abby's little Hitler youth would have had any idea about that

The thing where he crossed the country, including through territory that was hazardous *specifically because of the Fireflies* to deliver them a child, and they not only screwed him out of payment but planned to kill him for it?

It is implied they would've paid him and let him go if he hadn't gotten all pissy about Marlene's decision to vivisect Ellie

Even if I believed all the guys would listen to Marlene (Jerry's behavior already implied he might have ordered Joel killed and given Marlene the bird) the fact that they were so begrudging about it in light of everything, including the Hunters, already impeaches them

Well, you know Jerry didn't even really have to tell Marlene either but he did so in order to try to absolve his own conscience Everyone's internally conflicted about it and trying to resolve cognitive dissonance, that's probably why Abby's crew feels so strongly about Joel

You know, it's a deep personal wound They all already made peace with murdering a little girl, they're all complicit, the stain of that sin will never leave their souls But they thought they were trading that for a better world

By saving Ellie Joel took away that sweet reward without actually taking away the moral price they paid for it, he cheated them Now they have to live in this awful world still AND be awful people

I mean, if you're cowards. this whole setup is predicated on their being too chickenshit to face the fact that that was an awful decision and they can choose *again* to be better. but the whole premise of TLOU is that they can't, really, just like most of the raiders.
