This is where I admit a preference for star trek more broadly and the star trek novels, given half of them are authors being given permission to go nuts and half of them are canon to each other; star trek went "yeah, sure, people gaining god like esp powers seems neat" early on!

I think that's a thing there. Star Wars definitely has that rep, but it's far more about aesthetics than anything else. A Heisenberg Compensator is no more scientific than just saying "it's a hyperdrive, no I'm not telling you how it works".

And that rep is part of what we see here. "Serious" vs "light" scifi is frankly far more aesthetic than substance.
