Horror can't have a masked killer whose identity is not revealed until the end of the story, that would make it a murder mysteryhttps://twitter.com/matryoshka_core/status/1379836675304591364 …

Rod Temperton (the lyricist for the song, including Vincent Price's monologue) was British, I wonder if that influenced ithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Temperton …

When I wrote my tweet I thought of Price's "The Tingler," which is a science fiction thriller about an invisible parasite that feeds on the human shock response. He spends the whole movie trying to prove his hypothesis and is killed by the Tingler when he's proven right.

Pratchett described his writing, especially the Vimes stories, as "thrillers."

All genres are basically vague and shifty things that are hard to clarify (like the story of the elephant in the dark), which I believe is the point of this tweet thread, but I’ve always believed that the distinction is one of the protagonist’s power

In horror the protagonists are almost completely powerless to prevent their undoing, while in a thriller the deck can still be stacked against the protagonist but there’s more of an expectation that they’ll get out of it
